THE FINAL INSPECTION

The Soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass..

‘Step forward now, Soldier ,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?’
The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
‘No, Lord, I guess I ain’t
.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can’t always be a saint.

I’ve had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I’ve been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,
That wasn’t mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I’ve wept unmanly tears.

I know I don’t deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears

If you’ve a place for me here, Lord,
It needn’t be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don’t, I’ll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the Soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
‘Step forward now, you Soldier,
You’ve borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets,
You’ve done your time in Hell.’

It is the Soldier that Gives us Freedom

It’s the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us the freedom of the press.
It’s the Soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us the freedom of speech.
It’s the Soldier, not the politicians
That ensures our right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness..

It’s the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag.

A Soldier’s Prayer

I never dreamed it would be me,
my name for all eternity,

Recorded here at this hallow place,
alas, my name, no more my face.

“In the line of duty,” I hear them say:
my family now the price to pay.

My folded flag stained with their tears;
we only had those few short years.

The badge no longer on my chest,
I sleep now in eternal rest.

My sword I pass to those behind,

A Personal Story of Two Brothers in WWII

Please stop today and tell any soldier in your family that you are here for them. Take a moment to think of Arlington National Cemetery as well as so many others around our country that are Military Memorial Cemeteries.

I have more than just two uncles and friends buried in those cemeteries; the ones I tell about here, one buried in Oklahoma the other in Hawaii.

Here is a true story about these two brothers, both Marines as they happened per chance to meet in battle. It was called the battle of Okinawa, we had 183,00 that landed and took the Island. The statistic of that battle were that 102,000 Army and 81,000 Marine Corp. personnel fought for a must win battle on this small Island in the Pacific in WWII. They fought for 82 days and the U. S. had 50, 000 casualties of dead and wounded.

One of uncles was wounded on Okinawa as a Marine, and as they were carrying him off of the Island and back to a Navy medical ship, more Marines arrived for what each of them were told before landing would be one of the bloodiest battles in the Pacific, so they knew as they approached the beach that the casualties were going to be immense for the U. S.

By chance the wounded one met on the beach my other uncle which was his brother. One being carried off with bullets swirling in the air, one landing to take his place and dodging the bullets overhead as he landed on that beach and ran for cover.

However in the midst of fire and getting to safety they stopped and spoke for a few seconds, neither ever shared with any of us what they said, but truly like so many that each of us know they created the Band of Brothers. Both of my uncles are now gone, so what was said on that beach is lost for all times, perhaps that is how it is meant to be; so each of us can ponder what did two brothers say that day in just the few seconds their paths crossed?
