Disgraced Senator and Presidential “hopeful” John Edwards’ Federal Trial on six criminal counts related to nearly $1 million in secret payments from two wealthy campaign donors that was used to hide his pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008.
Nothing is simple in politics, is this trial politically motivated or did John Edwards commit campaign fraud?
No one is questioning that John Edwards received money from two donors, neither of which will testify, about the money or Edward’s mistress, Rielle Hunter.
First announcement before opening statements began with a WTF moment when U.S. District Court Judge Catherine C. Eagles said former Edwards aide Andrew Young called the three other witnesses in the last two weeks. Eagles ruled that lawyers for Edwards could mention the improper contact to jurors in opening arguments Monday, but barred them from using the term “witness tampering” or telling the jury that Young had a one-night stand with one of the other witnesses in 2007; a possible violation of federal law.
The Court seated 12 jurors and four alternates Monday morning. The panel is made up of nine men and seven women.
“It wasn’t just a marriage on the line,” prosecutor David Harbach said. “If the affair went public it would destroy his chance of becoming president, and he knew it. …He made a choice to break the law.”
Edwards’ defense team told the jury that most of the money at issue in the case went not to support Hunter, but was siphoned off by Young and his wife to build a $1.5 million “dream home” near Chapel Hill. Edwards’ lawyers contend the payments were gifts from friends intent on keeping the candidate’s wife from finding out about the affair. Elizabeth Edwards died in December 2010 after battling cancer.
A key issue will be whether Edwards knew about the payments made on his behalf by his national campaign finance chairman, the late Texas lawyer Fred Baron, and campaign donor Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, a now-101-year-old heiress and socialite. Each had already given Edwards’ campaign the maximum $2,300 individual contribution allowed by federal law.
Abbe Lowell, the well-known Washington lawyer who is representing Edwards, has said that even had Edwards known about the secret payments, his actions wouldn’t amount to a crime under federal law. Lowell has said in court that the government’s case relies on flawed legal reasoning, that the grand jury process was tainted and that the Republican federal prosecutor who led the investigation was motivated by partisanship. Lowell has derided what he calls the government’s “crazy” interpretation of federal law whereby money that was never handled by the candidate nor deposited in a campaign account is being defined as campaign contributions.
Follow the money and the mistress is my initial take on this! Cate Edwards, John Edwards eldest child and an attorney herself has been with her father entering court every day.
I will do a short article every night and catch all of us on the trial and what has lead all of us to this.
Here are the documents from June 3, 2011 through September 6, 2011. I will load the rest of the September documents right after we get this up and then I will have the witness list and the exhibit list up tomorrow night. So we finally have a good trial with sex, alleged criminal actions to cover it up, and witnesses in trouble with the judge already. What a great start.

Robert A. Jakucs is a retired Los Angeles Police Department Detective with over 30-years of investigative experience. William Cox worked in a variety of assignments including uniformed patrol, CRASH (gang detail) in South-Central and West Los Angeles areas. He also worked homicides for over 20 years and finished his career in Robbery-Homicide Division (RHD) which handles major cases including serial killers, multiple murders, media and high-profile cases, officer-involved shootings, and assaults and murders on police officers. He also worked the Rampart Corruption Task Force for two years. William Cox was also involved or handled several high-profile cases over the years including the Kimes (mother-son grifters who were responsible for 3 murders in LA, NY, and the Bahamas); the Goetz of the West case; the murder of the pregnant mother at LAX; plus several others.
William Cox has appeared on Investigative Discovery channel, 48 Hours, and E-entertainment. He is currently employed by the US State Dept. as a background investigator.
William Cox’s last case he worked on at RHD was a Chinese immigrant student attending USC who had gone to a frat party and had attempted to pull a gun and start shooting students. He was wrestled to the ground by other students who then called police. After a search warrant was served on the suspect’s apartment Cox and three other detectives were sent to NY City to investigate and attempt to identify approximately 20 persons he had targeted to possibly kill. (This incident occurred shortly after the mass murders at West Virginia Tech.) Cox was also working on a murder where a husband set his car and wife on fire on the Golden State Frwy. Cox had also been working (for the past four years) on a double homicide that had occurred in 2002 wherein two victims were killed in their car and their car set on fire. That murder was the story that 48 Hours has done and shown on television in February 2011.

Straight Talk with Celebrity P. I. John J. Nazarian guest tonight is is best selling author Kevin Mitnick. Kevin’s book, Ghost in the Wires: My Adventures as the World’s Most Wanted Hacker, is an autobiography of the onetime “most wanted” criminal of cyberspace. Kevin Metnick recounts his exploits; it is a hacker tells all as he was on the FBI most wanted list.

While he excelled at infiltrating computer systems from a keyboard and had a sharp memory for numbers, “Ghost in the Wires” (written with William L. Simon) really showcases another of Mitnick’s skills: social engineering, or what he describes as “the casual or calculated manipulation of people to influence them to do things they would not ordinarily do.” By doing his research and impersonating authority figures over the phone or by e-mail, Mitnick found he could persuade just about anybody — programmers, technicians, even the nice lady at the Social Security Administration — to give him the things he wanted, like passwords, computer chips and personal information about F.B.I. informants on his tail. “People, as I had learned at a very young age, are just too trusting,” he writes.
It’s this element to his story that makes “Ghost in the Wires” read like a contemporary über-geeky thriller. Many of today’s computer viruses and identity-theft scams — and even the recent phone-hacking scandals of certain newspapers — depend on social engineering mixed with a misuse of technology to dupe the unsuspecting. In that regard, Mitnick’s memoir also serves as a wake-up call for anyone trying to keep personal information private.
Metnick has been out of prison since 2000, Mitnick now works as a security consultant. Metnick is also booked around the world as a speaker.

Perhaps he can explain why Iran’s media is telling the world how they were able to take “control” of a U. S. Drone in the last two weeks and get it to land in their country where they are now studying the latest U. S. technology in “stealth” airplanes and drones.
The U. S. has been warning for years that the most serious attack the U. S. could suffer from is not a typical war like attack by military, but a cyber attack on our infrastructure. John will be asking Kevin what that means and what if anything the average citizen can do about protecting themselves or what they can do to attempt to survive such an attack.

Nazarian begins tonight’s show with his thoughts of the shooting death of gay teen Lawrence “Larry” King at school by another teen, Brandon McInerney. The jury dead locked on a trial in October, and in November McIneney did a plea deal that gives McInerney 21 years in jail for the murder of King; McInerney will be out of jail at the age of 39. This shooting death affecting John Nazarian to the point he has a picture of King on his desk.
Then Nazarian will turn to a more positive hope for LGBTQ teens with previous guests Jefferson Fietek and Tammy Aaberg of Justin’s Gift.

I had tuned into the press conference of Gloria Allred and her client, Sharon Bialek, the first woman to step forward publicly with sexual harassment charges against Herman Cain. I had wanted to see the interview, partially because the count is up to four women and partially because if a woman has been “wronged” in the last few years, here comes Allred.
However, I only watched about 4 – 6 minutes just the introduction by Allred and a few comments by Allred about her client Sharon Bialek when across the bottom of the screen came the announcement that the Dr. Conrad Murray verdict was in regarding the death of Michael Jackson. Once again bad timing for Allred, seems there was another crises like this that was bad timing once before for her, but I don’t remember that now, or who it was.
I remember that GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain had scheduled a news conference for his denial and I had better things to do…. but then the Google alerts began to come in…. and with those the name L. Lin Wood Jr. I perked up and for those of you who are behind in the world of politics he said, she said, he said, and piling on candidates, often eating their own; I wanted to know what was going on to pull in two attorneys not normally found in any cases together.

However, the story behind the story is that Herman Cain intends to fight these allegations aggressively and continue his candidacy for the Republican nomination. So it is over, up steps Lin Wood and the four women fold???? Not on your life, Gloria Allred is not to be deter by Wood. She was back on this morning with her client Bialek “suggesting today, Wednesday, that the presidential contender was lying yesterday when he said he doesn’t remember Bialek.”
So now we have the first real shot across the bow and a declaration of perhaps a war in words or actions soon to follow.

The world waits for the Jury Verdict to come in next week in the Dr. Conrad Murray Trial in the Involuntary Manslaughter charge in the death of Michael Jackson.
What is Dr. Murray and his lead defense attorney Edward Chernoff thinking and doing today, waiting for the jury to come back perhaps as early as tomorrow with a verdict.

William Cox was also involved or handled several high-profile cases over the years including the Kimes (mother-son grifters who were responsible for 3 murders in LA, NY, and the Bahamas); the Goetz of the West case; the murder of the pregnant mother at LAX; plus several others.
William Cox has appeared on Investigative Discovery channel, 48 Hours, and E-entertainment. He is currently employed by the US State Dept. as a background investigator.
William Cox’s last case he worked on at RHD was a Chinese immigrant student attending USC who had gone to a frat party and had attempted to pull a gun and start shooting students. He was wrestled to the ground by other students who then called police. After a search warrant was served on the suspect’s apartment Cox and three other detectives were sent to NY City to investigate and attempt to identify approximately 20 persons he had targeted to possibly kill. (This incident occurred shortly after the mass murders at West Virginia Tech.) Cox was also working on a murder where a husband set his car and wife on fire on the Golden State Frwy. Cox had also been working (for the past four years) on a double homicide that had occurred in 2002 wherein two victims were killed in their car and their car set on fire. That murder was the story that 48 Hours has done and shown on television in February 2011.
With this combined years of experience this is a must tune in a listen and even ask a question of two as to what we should expect this coming week of the verdict watch for Dr. Conrad Murray.
