Keith Olbermann Suspended from MSNBC! Who Next?

Subtitle: Or is it an Excuse as Comcast gets Ready to Come on Board?
Late Friday afternoon, November 5 2010, CNN broke the news that Keith Olbermann had been suspended indefinitely without pay for making three political contributions without the “approval” of MSNBC president Phil Griffin. However by today, November 7, 2010 that is not holding water and the backlash is something Comcast, GE, and MSNBC probably never imagined.
If you want a story to die, you release it on Friday afternoon when no one will notice and then it dies over the weekend. Politicians do this all of the time, but this time the Keith Olbermann dispute is gaining steam and putting Griffin in a no-win situation, or as much of that kind of situation you can put a rich dude with a title in.
I watched Rachael Maddow on Friday night to hear the “most” that MSNBC is going to allow to be said on their network… “Allowed”??? Yes they have the final say in what will be on their network, like it or hit the door.
As Thomas Jefferson once said; “[A despotic] government always [keeps] a kind of standing army of news writers who, without any regard to truth or to what should be like truth, [invent] and put into the papers whatever might serve the ministers. This suffices with the mass of the people who have no means of distinguishing the false from the true.” Jefferson also had confidence which today rests with our computers and Google of saying; “I am persuaded that the good sense of the people will always be found to be the best army. They may be led astray for a moment, but will soon correct themselves. The people are the only censors of their governors, and even their errors will tend to keep these to the true principles of their institution.”
After that what did I do? I went to my favorite of “let Google be your friend” and began to hunt for my truth. What I found out there is amazing, confusing and should scare all of us. First Olbermann was suspended for giving political contributions without permissions from his overlords. By today it is because he would not apologize on the air, not that any of us would know why he was doing that, nor would we care. Griffin might be changing to this because over the weekend it is getting more difficult for Griffin to find employees that have not given as in no host to take over for Keith on Monday, so the story has again changed to the apology angle.
Joe Scarborough of “Morning Joe” with nutso co-host, Mika Brzezinski, (I say nutso because she is), and pundit Pat Buchanan, who guarantees a channel change in our home when he begins to spew his hate on air. Besides what Buchanan has given while being on MSNBC it was found that WAY back in 2006, Scarborough had given the maximum $4,200 contribution to the Oregon congressional race of close friend Derrick Kitts. On Friday MNSBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines put out a statement that said; “That contribution was made in accordance with (network) policy. Joe sought permission in advance. Since 2007 we have recommitted ourselves to following these important standards.”
That lasted about four hours before it was uncovered by POLITICO, the same organization that reported the Olbermann donations; found that statement was also FALSE. Scarborough made a $5,000 contribution in April 2010 to Alabama state legislative candidate John Merrill, who said the two have been close friends since they attended the University of Alabama together. Merrill had no real Democratic opponent.” So of course he needed Joe’s contribution, Joe tell us it anit’ so? That caused nutso Mika Brzezinski to give an interview to POLITICO, not something anyone is doing that works for MSNBC on behalf of Olbermann by the way. Mika basically said, Joe this is MY JOB, throw you long time friend under the bus, tell them he LIED. Her exact quote was in part; “That contribution should have been in the name of Scarborough’s wife, Susan Scarborough. The Scarboroughs expect John Merrill will amend his campaign report to accurately reflect that reality. If he does not, I will recommend they file an ethics complaint against him.” Brzezinski also challenged Merrill’s recollection of having brought Scarborough to Tuscaloosa for an August 2009 fundraiser for the county Republican Party, which Merrill said “was unbelievably successful. We raised a ton of money that we used to help local candidates.” Mika jumped on that to spin it as; “That event was billed as a tribute to Gov. Bob Riley on his retirement from politics, any suggestion that Joe Scarborough went to the University event to raise money for a political party is false. Sadly, many politicians try to elevate their standing by exaggerating their connection to Joe. This is one of those cases.” Yea Mika like unknown pundits wannabes like you elevate yourself in all of this.
That said it appears that Mika has the power to make a politician change his “story”, go figure Contrary to a VERY different interview with POLITICO earlier on Friday, I suggest you read that interview at POLITICO. Mika (cough cough seems to think she has the power she has claimed) cause on Friday evening, Merrill issued a chastened statement to POLITICO asserting that the $5,000 donation — his biggest individual donation of the campaign — was “from Susan Scarborough … I am very appreciative of her support.”
Mika shut up and sit down. We know your ratings are in the crapper but frankly I liked you better when you showed up at work, with curlers in your hair, very little make-up and chomping your breakfast on camera. I still turned you off though and even if by accident you and Morning Joe are on my television in the early morning hours by accident, WELL let’s just say thank God for quick remote controls. That said I would be doing this of you so think before you are fast to throw someone else under the bus, you might need support one day.
There is a much bigger story here that is probably closer to the truth, when POLITICO wrote that the decision was made by Steve Burke, a Bush fundraiser, who will be placed at the helm of MSNBC and other NBC companies after the buy-out of NBC Universal. Burke has not made any secret it appears of not liking Olbermann, and in previous interviews when asked about Olbermann’s style of reporting said to ask him again in six to twelve months. Perhaps this is a preview?
POLITICO corrected that error with the following: “UPDATED: We have been notified that Comcast has not yet officially taken over MSNBC/NBC Universal. Although Comcast has tentatively finalized a deal to purchase a majority stake in NBC, Comcast awaits final approval of the takeover from the Justice Department and from the Federal Communications Commission. A statement from Comcast reads: “The joint venture between Comcast and GE has not yet received regulatory approval. Comcast is not in any way involved with decisions made currently by NBC News.” However, once Comcast gains final approval from federal regulators to move forward, Comcast COO Steve Burke, a Bush fundraiser, will be placed at the helm of MSNBC and other NBC companies. Our original post inaccurately asserted that Comcast’s Burke was involved in the decision to fire Olbermann. We apologize for the error”.
All of this said and done what causes me the most alarm and this fiasco has I hope brought to the forefront for a lot of us is that Comcast has a pending deal with NBC Universal to buy them for $80 billion, that is right BILLION, dollars and has been moving on getting permission to do that with the Justice Department and the FCC. The why they need permission is what shocked me. With the purchase of NBC Universal Comcast will control 25% of what all of us see on TV. Let that sink in they will control ONE-QUARTER of what is available for every watcher of television. Now their deal is a sure thing to go through because they bought the votes with $32 million dollars in contributions to the best politicians for sale out there.
Twenty, [20], public interest, industry and consumer groups have announced a coalition to oppose the proposed merger between Comcast and NBC Universal, citing its potential harm on competition and consumer choice. “As the nation’s largest cable company, the largest Internet service provider, the NBC broadcast networks, owner of the local NBC and Telemundo stations in some of the nation’s largest media markets, owner of dozens of national, regional and local news, entertainment and sports cable networks, and owner or part-owner of some of the most heavily visited Web sites on the Internet, the merged entity will exert a degree of power unknown in our nation’s media history,” the coalition’s letter said. “That degree of concentrated power is fundamentally threatening to the public interest. Before allowing such a sea-change to take place, these impacts must be fully studied and understood – and the threats must be mitigated through energetic applications of the government’s regulatory authority.”
As a side note but one to pay attention to is Comcast is anti net neutrality as in they want you to pay to find sites like ours or block small sites altogether and to slow down both the ability to get to sites. , savetheinternet.com explains that companies like Comcast want “to be Internet gatekeepers, deciding which Web sites go fast or slow and which won’t load at all. They want to tax content providers to guarantee speedy delivery of their data. — while slowing down or blocking services offered by their competitors. These companies have a new vision for the Internet. Instead of a level playing field, they want to reserve express lanes for their own content and services — or those of big corporations that can afford the steep tolls — and leave the rest of us on a winding dirt road.”
In closing I want to quote two more great insights to all of this:
Russell Simmons’ op-ed at the Huffington Post.com in saying not only will he pay those pesky three contributions made by Keith but says what many of us feel. “Keith Olbermann has given voice to the voiceless, sanity to the madness, truth where lies are now a daily part of our political discourse. … If he goes we lose the Edward Murrow of our generation, the voice that spits truth to power and vested interests.”
Secondly another quote by Jefferson; “The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter…”
I also want to say that Olbermann puts his money and time in what he believes. When he saw Free Clinics in action in poor areas he took notice. He raised all of our awareness and promoted and help fund much larger Free Clinics to those in need. So for what everyone else is doing he is now punished and perhaps will not return to Count Down, if he does then whether on the right or left we all lose.
So with this being Rose Speaks.com first ever political or save anyone editorial here are the places you can go to make sure whether you love or hate Keith Olbrmann that his voice not be silenced for if he is silenced for MSNBC to become a baby “Fox” then who is next and when it is us who will be left to speak up?

Yes I have joined all of the efforts and in disclosure I gave to Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign a very small amount, but sometimes those small amounts or the lone voice can get traction and help.
Here is a sample you can send when signing the Petition and is what I added to my signature: “Friday, November 05, 2010 This is the last night for me to watch MSNBC until Keith is back. Only watched tonight to hear what Rachel Maddow had to say. GOOD BYE Mmmmmmmm where will your advertisers go, perhaps CNN where your viewers will go?”
Yes I love Rachel and think I would like Lawrence O’Donnald but sometimes you just have to watch reruns so MSNBC is hurt in the only way that matters, viewers which equal advertising dollars. Keep the heat of MSNBC and say, “you can’t hide something this unfair by saying it late on Friday afternoon, we are smarter than that”.

Never underestimate the ability of one person added to one person and what can be done. Both conservatives and liberals were united in this that Kieth should have never been suspended (I still think they thought they could replace him and fire him). All weekend potential guest hosts have continued to say NO, relied on guests on shows have said NO, not to just MSNBC but all NBC and their affiliates…
Like management often does after this exploded in their face and they knew come Monday morning it was going to just get bigger, like eating that cereal you don’t like and it just gets bigger and bigger in your mouth and not able to swallow Phil Griffin took the easy way out and had a spokesman send out an email tonight (note Griffin had no problem speaking for himself and MSNBC on Friday) The petition to reinstate Kieth went viral on the internet with over a quarter million people signing it in less than 48 hours.
STATEMENT REGARDING KEITH OLBERMANN – SUNDAY, NOV. 7
From Phil Griffin, President of MSNBC:
After several days of deliberation and discussion, I have determined that suspending Keith through and including Monday night’s program is an appropriate punishment for his violation of our policy. We look forward to having him back on the air Tuesday night.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/07/keith-olbermann-to-return_n_780141.html
Thanks for this Rose. I love Keith and I for one was going to be done with MSNBC. Will be watching Tuesday Night for sure.
My signature was on that petition to restore Keith’s position on air. So glad that Keith will be returning on Tuesday. MSNBC is where I get most of the televised news and in particular Keith and Rachel. Chris Matthews never shuts up long enough to get an answer. Ed is ok. I do enjoy watching Lawrence O’Donnell but not when he becomes rude to the guest. Keith and Rachel are fair with their guests where-as the others will either interrupt or challenge to a point that the guest doesn’t have the opportunity to respond. Joe Scarborough is probably the worst on interrupting the guest and when will he stop saying “when he was elected into Congress in 1994″. I’ve never counted but am guessing within the morning 3-hour span, Joe says this at least 10/12 times. At least with Keith and Rachel, you feel like you’re getting to the truth whereby Faux News is overly partisan and often times without a grain of truth. I want just the facts not distortions.
#3 Sammy1, So was my. I have never written an op editorial on anything before on this site, but this was where in our own small way each of us needed to say a collective WTF. I might start doing one editorial on Sundays, we will see.. BTW go to that site and sign the national welcome back Keith. With over 300 thousand signatures in 48 hours, Griffin and company had to know that the phone calls and emails were going to be HUGE this week and this was not going to go away. Sometimes it is good to be the “headache”.

Release of new Jackson track creates confusion

On Friday, it was announced that Katherine Jackson and her business partner had released a previously unheard Michael Jackson song, “Opis None,” to overcome “confusion” surrounding the authenticity of a different Sony-released teaser track. But the “Opis None” has created confusion of its own.
Last week, executives at Sony released a preview of a track, “Breaking News,” from the upcoming album, “Michael,” sparking controversy among Jackson’s fans, who doubted the vocals belonged to the singer.
Rose wonderful Op editorial. I don’t watch TV but do catch clips on the net and I think no matter what side you are on we need to stop the takeover of the net by these organizations. If that happens we may as well be in China or Iran for that matter where they shut ya down.I could not believe a person would have to get permission to donate to someone for whatever reason. What is next your workplace other than the TV telling you who you can and cannot give to or making you ask for permission first. That kind of lets the voting is private and no one knows who ya vote for a laugh doesn’t it?Was so happy to hear Keith is back .We need Keith and Rachel to push back on the Joe S.,Bill O and the like who do not give their guest time to finish what they want to say.I think it is a good idea to have political editorials. All voices need to be heard not just one side. I was really hoping Texas would have turned blue or at least got Perry out of there.
Mika Brzezinski…OMG…so thankful to learn I am not alone in my thoughts about her!
#4 Rose – I sent my congrats last night. It’s such good news that Keith will be returning Tuesday.
Two or three times a day I check Huff Po for the latest news. I like their layout and can generally find what I’m looking for.
Pysch is returning Wednesday with new episodes.
Brun Notice reurns Thursday with new episodes.
An email tonight from Keith to everyone that reacted over the weekend.
A STATEMENT TO THE VIEWERS OF COUNTDOWN
by Keith Olbermann
I want to sincerely thank you for the honor of your extraordinary and ground-rattling support. Your efforts have been integral to the remedying of these recent events, and the results should remind us of the power of individuals spontaneously acting together to correct injustices great or small. I would also like to acknowledge with respect the many commentators and reporters, including those with whom my politics do not overlap, for their support.
I also wish to apologize to you viewers for having precipitated such anxiety and unnecessary drama. You should know that I mistakenly violated an inconsistently applied rule – which I previously knew nothing about – that pertains to the process by which such political contributions are approved by NBC. Certainly this mistake merited a form of public acknowledgment and/or internal warning, and an on-air discussion about the merits of limitations on such campaign contributions by all employees of news organizations. Instead, after my representative was assured that no suspension was contemplated, I was suspended without a hearing, and learned of that suspension through the media.
You should also know that I did not attempt to keep any of these political contributions secret; I knew they would be known to you and the rest of the public. I did not make them through a relative, friend, corporation, PAC, or any other intermediary, and I did not blame them on some kind of convenient ‘mistake’ by their recipients. When a website contacted NBC about one of the donations, I immediately volunteered that there were in fact three of them; and contrary to much of the subsequent reporting, I immediately volunteered to explain all this, on-air and off, in the fashion MSNBC desired.
I genuinely look forward to rejoining you on Countdown on Tuesday, to begin the repayment of your latest display of support and loyalty – support and loyalty that is truly mutual.
–K.O.

11. IMO, at first, the plastic surgery was done to gain his fathers approval. To get rid of his “FAT NOSE” that Joe always teased Michael about. Then because it was a botched job, many other surgeries followed. I can’t imagine what Joe Jackson said to Michael after the Vitiligo started. I have no love for the man that was Michael Jackson’s father. He physically and mentally abused his children. I remember him promoting his own record company right after his son had died. What a piece of chit. The man came to my area soon after Michael died to collect an award that was issued to Michael. I wouldn’t drive a mile to see him. Screw that.
I didn’t see that interview and hopefully I can catch it online. I just got back from vacation. The ship I was on had a halloween party one night and the entertainers did Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. The cruise director came out as Michael and danced to Thriller. They also did a tribute to Michael Jackson in one of their clubs.
I am beginning to question Katherine’s motives of late. I understand the book that was made, but to be releasing songs of Michael’s is just not in her favor. I sense Joe in the background of this manuver. Let the executors run the estate Katherine. So far they are doing well. In total, more than $86,000 grand a month is going to you and the children for the support.
For crying out loud, stop supporting everyone else with Michael’s money. Kick the freeloaders to the curb and let them earn their own $$. The estate is for Michael’s children, not for all of their aunts, uncles and cousins.
Diamondgirl—I think Michael left millions and millions of dollars in bills. It appears he owed everyone and there uncle money.Katherine will not come out an mention that fact,it is private. You know Joe reminds me of a Bull Dog,looks like one to.I have a hard time thinking of the boy, that destroyed Michael’s spirit and his reputation.Dr Murray cleaning up the room and have put meds away before the EMT got there,to be shows guilt, and if he did nothing wrong, there is no need to hide anything.Alao not pronouncing Michael dead till they got to the hospital .

Nearly a year after Michael Jackson’s death, the managers overseeing his estate have stabilized its precarious financial situation, but at least one major liability still looms: a $300 million loan due at the end of this year.

The Associated Press
The Jackson family’s Encino, Calif., home, where foreclosure was averted.
.Thanks to the surge of fan interest sparked by Mr. Jackson’s death, the singer generated an estimated $200 million posthumously, allowing the estate to pay off tens of millions of dollars in debt and avert foreclosure on the suburban Los Angeles complex where the singer’s mother lives.
Since Mr. Jackson’s death last June 25, his businesses have been run by the singer’s longtime lawyer, John Branca, and a music-industry veteran and personal friend of Mr. Jackson’s named John McClain. Unlike traditional executors, Messrs. Branca and McClain are aggressively managing Mr. Jackson’s affairs as a going concern. The estate’s primary beneficiaries are Mr. Jackson’s three young children and his 80-year-old mother, Katherine, who is now the children’s guardian.
There is more to the story….
But ! The money in the Michael Jackson Family Trust Fund cannot be atttached for any debts. From my understanding as of right now, each child will receive their share of the trust in stages. Katherine only has use of 40% of the fund. upon her death, that 40% reverts back to the children. It has been estimated that Jackson’s shares of Sony is valued in the billions.

However, the ATV/Sony catalog includes all the rights to most of the Beatles songs (the important ones anyway) along with various other artists. Its appraised value is estimated as high as $2 billion, and since Mr. Jackson’s demise the value of his own MiJac catalog could eventually come in just as high.

Beverly, there is a lot to be said about Jordon Chandler and his father and the Alvarez children. But give me a few more days home before opening up that topic in the community.
I find it rather ironic that those who supported any charges being filed against Stern, Kapoor and Dr E do not seek the same justice for Jackson. It is a shame that it is all based on what their opinion of the victim is. I keep reading that Jackson begged for the drugs, well so did Anna if the truth be told. No one forced the drugs into her. But yet those same people consider that Anna was murdered and Jackson deserved it.
What would happen if Jordan Chandler came out and stated that his father lied? Would he be believed then? I doubt it.
#15 Diamond I agree with you.. .. I haven’t been in the community yet, need help with password
There is definetly different ways of handling Howard and Dr Murray.. …
heath, what’s wrong with the pw? need a new one?
ken …yep. I lost the last one and I made it so complicated too….:)
Good day all – nothing new here other than taking care of everyday life. We’re experiencing warmer weather this week and I must admit it’s great. Cold weather is not my choice and would must prefer living in a warmer state but financially that’s not feasible unless I were to win the lottery. That would be a wonderful thing not only for me but for others as well. This economy sucks!!! Tighten the belts, save everything you can for tomorrow. Rainy days are already here. On the good side, I’ve reached an age whereby I no longer care about how many shoes or handbags are in my closet. hahaha As long as the PC and TV works as intended and there is food in the pantry and the bills are paid, I’m okay. Having a lot of stuff isn’t important; hanging onto what I do have is.
Sincerely hope everyone is okay during these stressful times. Things will get better but will never be the same. Here’s to brighter days.
heath, you talking about the new public or the old private?

Valium can be used for the treatment of anxiety, alcohol withdrawal, muscle spasms, or seizures. Valium and other benzodiazepine medications have several effects on the body, including relaxing muscles, causing sleepiness, and reducing anxiety. A few off-label Valium uses include the treatment of agitation, insomnia, and benzodiazepine withdrawal (which can occur when a person stops taking a benzodiazepine medication too quickly).
Some posters have visions of granduer. Perry has done nothing wrong in his handling of the trial. The jury will recommend the sentences for Kris and Stern. The judge will do as he sees fit since he knows the law a bit better than most, if not all, jurors.
If Stern does jail time, oh well. While he did not write the prescriptions with his name on them, he also did not refuse to pick them either. I am unsure of which time period he was convicted of. As I have said if it was after Daniel’s death, he did what he had to do in order to get Anna’s medication to her in the Bahamas. BFD.
As far as Topix, what a riot. Some people tend to forget how a certain poster made fun of all those people who lost their homes after Hurricane Katrina. I see that Karma has struck. Oh well….
#22 Diamond Girl, it is my understanding that Judge Perry is not going to ask the jury to come back and recommend a sentence. They have been excused and it is Judge Perry asking for reports, etc. and will make up his mind on Jan. 6th what to do and if anyone goes to jail. I am sure there will be multiple Motions but all sides filed before then for him to rule on Jan. 6th.
and the Topix people think they can have Perry removed?
Good Morning,Well I thought I was finished with Anna Nicole but I WILL NOT let this crusade to get Howard keep going and shut up.QV is now going back to the Bahama Inquest, and how poor Daniel was treated.Well poor Daniel had a Grandma, seems when Grandma wanted daniel “trust fund” grandma had the best Lawyer around pro bono” ha ha”WHY did Vergie in 10 years never concern herself with Daniel and how poor Daniel was .WHY were these lawyers only around when mother and son died.Howard was not in CAL ,when Daniel attended collage,WHERE was all that grandma love,Daniel also had other member’s of his “family” where were they ,like his daddy ,who never was there for his son ,I am sick of hearing Howard’s name in this. Vergie sure fought hard for the money child”Dannielynn” telling the whole world she was afraid for Dannielynn,But of all the years her daughter was drinking and taking meds, where was the concern for Daniel VERGIE’S GRANDSON.this piece of work, worked for the police department 28 years, she knew what to do for Daniel, she did NOTHING
Also, that stupid Harding PI,who said Daniel was worried about his mother but did not have money to hire him,With supposed concern for his mothers welfare,if he did not have money ,where does a young boy go,to family of course, and voice his concern’s.Some member of his “family” THE TROUBLE WITH THAT WAS daniel had no loving family,Grandma or daddy or cousins or anyone. That PI was a proven LIAR
I also want to know, why Verge at the Inquest of her dead grandson was ALWAYS SMILING ,and WAVING to the public .That sure was not the face of a griving Grandma.
Beverly, there is no sense in you getting yourself all worked up due to what they are saying over at Topix. These people still believe the people who have been proven liars. They worship Mark Hatten..
, believed in a lawyer who screwed over his clients, believe what FS orginally stated, believe the set of lies DO has told and still swear that RC was telling the truth in her book. They will never ever admit that they were wrong about anything.
