Walter Cronkite the most trusted man in America 1916-2009

From 1961 to 1981 Walter Cronkite came into my home every night and my parents trusted him totally. If Cronkite said it, then it was true. We, like many American homes, believed he was “the most trusted man in America”.

There has been much said about his passing and what he stood for. For my family, he was the voice for middle America and he was the most trusted man in America. We had a black and white television and when he came on, homework stopped, dishes were left to be washed later, my dad’s newspaper was laid to the side and as many families, we stopped for thirty minutes as a family and got the news of the day.

Cronkite came from a line of journalists in the tradition of Edward R. Murrow, who in the 50’s, produced a series of TV news reports that helped lead to the censure of Senator Joseph McCarthy and thus the end of a time of terror where all of Hollywood feared being labeled a communist and put on a “black list” if they failed to report on others as communists following WWII. McCarthyism became it’s own term in the 1950’s because McCarthy cashed in on American’s fear thus he was able to lead his own reign of terror in the U. S. Senate. Does this sound familiar with the fear tapped into by political leaders following September 11, 2001?

On July 7, 1952, the term “anchor” was coined to describe Cronkite’s role at both the Democratic and the Republican National Conventions, which marked the first nationally-televised convention coverage. He also expanded evening news from 15 to 30 minutes on September 2, 1963, making Cronkite the anchor of American network television’s first nightly half-hour news program.

Cronkite carried us from the heights of landing on the moon to the lows of multiple assassinations in the 1960’s. All of us remember exactly where we were when Cronkite, who showed emotion as he seldom did saying journalists were about reporting, but that day there was a tear in his eye and his voice broke as he told the nation that John F. Kennedy had been killed by an assassin in Dallas Texas, my home town. Cronkite carried us through those horrible days that followed… the burial of President Kennedy, watching a young widow with two small children… and even in that he taught us history; pointing out that the same funeral bier held Kennedy’s casket, which rested on the same catafalque that had supported Lincoln’s bier. So even in the public mourning of a nation Cronkite taught us history, explaining that Jacqueline Kennedy had President Abraham Lincoln’s funeral researched and based her own “blue print” on that, for her fallen husband, President Kennedy’s, public funeral. Cronkite taught us history from the East Room to the Capital Rotunda to the horseless rider with a boot turned backward to show a fallen hero. We cried as a nation and it was Cronkite that placed the historical events in perspective for us.

On June 6, 1964 Cronkite did a special report called “D-Day +20 and brought Retired General and former president Dwight D. Eisenhower out of retirement and to return to his former Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) headquarters for an interview with Cronkite.

Cronkite brought us many reports of the ever changing times from 1962 to 1981, the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. He brought us the news of “Bloody Sunday” that started on March 7, 1965, where we saw 600 civil rights marchers attacked by state and local police with billy clubs and tear gas. These were our fellow Americans and most of us thought about it, followed it via Cronkite and a few of us feared that could be us. On March 9, 1965 the civil rights marchers tried again and were attacked and again it was Walter Cronkite that brought it into our homes. Cronkite brought us the news from March 21, 1965 thru March 26, 1965 as the marchers made the 54 miles from Selma to Montgomery Alabama with a civil rights leader named Martin Luther King Jr. at the front of the line of marchers. The Selma to Montgomery marches marked the political and emotional peak of the American civil rights movement and Walter Cronkite never failed us in his objective coverage, again all in black and white televisions with families like mine around the country gathered in front of the televisions with their parents telling, as mine told me, we were witnessing history. There was Governor George Wallace, who in 1962 marked the tone for what was to come in Alabama during his 1962 inauguration saying: “In the name of the greatest people that have ever trod this earth, I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny, and I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever”. We remember Wallace standing at the doors of the University of Alabama on June 11, 1963 to stop desegregation as two Afro-Americans, Vivian Malone and James Hood, were escorted to the doors by federal marshals in a confrontation we all feared would turn into more blood shed. Walter Cronkite brought us that, as he did Martin Luther King’s speech at the Washington D. C. mall to a crowd of over a million people. For the Civil Rights movement would not be stopped and like many times in our countries history we grew, we changed, and Cronkite was there every evening or on assignment telling us objectively what was happening but also reassuring us.

The democratic convention in 1968 was one of the other times he allowed emotions to take over for a few seconds and brought Americans to know of the riots at the convention and that the police even entered the convention and began to rough up newsmen. It was Cronkite who turned and had the cameras show us as he called the police “hoodlums”. We had lost another potential great leader in June 1968 when Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles California. The late 50’s and 60’s were turbulent times and Cronkite was there, ending his newscasts with “And that’s the way it is…”

Beginning on January 16, 1980, “Day 50″ of the Iran hostage crisis, Cronkite added the length of the hostages’ captivity to the show’s closing to remind the audience of the unresolved situation, ending only on “Day 444″, January 20, 1981. Something that Keith Olbermann has started doing, is a similar technique with a closing Count Down, counting each day since May 1, 2003 when President George W. Bush declared “mission accomplished” in Iraq.
Cronkite also brought us through the Cuban missile crisis, the Vietnam War, where, following a trip to Vietnam, Cronkite did in an editorial on the Vietnam War and that was the beginning of the end of the war as President Lyndon Johnson said, “If I have lost Cronkite, I have lost middle America.”

Cronkite brought us the Watergate scandal. When President Richard M. Nixon resigned it was Cronkite who said our Constitution works almost two hundred years after being drawn up by our founding fathers, it worked; and no man, not even a President was above the laws of the U. S. Constitution and we learned history again from Cronkite.

Cronkite brought us the Apollo 11 Moon landing on July 20, 1969, and when the rocket carrying our astronauts launched from Cape Canaveral Florida again in a seldom show of emotion, Cronkite led the nation with the phrase, “Go baby go”. When they landed Cronkite expressed what we all felt with a simple, “Wow”; and again we, [my family], knew he was coming into our home via a black and white television and extending our history lessons from the classrooms at school to our living rooms at home.

There is a Chinese Proverb of “May you live in interesting times”. I have only recently learned was a curse and not a blessing but for us, we have been blessed by living in both interesting times as well as historical times and like the sailing Cronkite so loved in his private life, he also held the helm of the ship of history of the 60’s and 70’s and we learned so much from him.

Go baby, Go, thank you for teaching my generation so much, we will not see the likes of you again Mr. Cronkite and as Mr Cronkite said every night in my home growing up, “That is the way it is; Tuesday, July 21, 2009”.

I TOO CAN REMEMBER CLEARLY LOOKING THROUGH THE FRONT WINDOW OF THE ‘MILLERS’, JACKIE WAS A FRIEND AND HIS DAD WAS A PHARMACISTS. AND IN THERE LIVING ROOM WAS A COLOR TV! THAT WAS A BIG DEAL AND I CAN RECALL CLEARLY HOW I HATED TO GO BACK HOME AND WATCH OUR BLACK AND WHITE ZENITH. FOR ME I CAN ALSO RECALL MANY OF THESE EVENTS, AND ANOTHER ISSUE FOR ME IS A LITTLE PAINFUL EACH AND EVERY TIME I HEAR OR READ ABOUT ANOTHER PERSON OR PLACE THAT I GREW UP WITH NOT BEING AROUND ANYMORE. WHAT IT DOES IT BRINGS US CLOSER TO OUR OWN MORTALITY.

AND THAT IS THE WAY IT IS…..UNFORTUNATELY.

Though the things Walter Cronkite reported on in his early career I was too young to remember or even understand but as I got older, I came to appreciate his journalism due to he reported on facts not opinions. Wow whatever happened to those days of true journalism!

Rose you are right we most likely will never see another like Mr. Cronkite.

July 7, 2009 a housekeeping Order changing Magistrates reporting to the judge that oversees the terms of settlement in the Stern vs. O’Quinn lawsuit the Administrative judge did the reassignments of several courts and in fact in this case we have seen this happen once before about 18 months ago.

Great article Rose and JMA IMO we will never see true news without the spin again.

  5. Bewildered says:

    Great article!

Maybe what made Cronkite so good, was you knew you could trust what he was saying. Our’s was a Philco. Alot of the signifigance of those moments in history, didn’t make sense to me then. Now I have books on JFK and WW2. Those 2 little children with their hands in salute mode, is still heart wrenching. And I remember my Dad proclaiming “the eagle has landed” when my bro came home from a long weekend.

Hard to find the same caliber of journalist now as he was then. Seems everyone has an agenda, and sensationalism is rampant for ratings. National Enquirer wasn’t around then was it? BTJ? *Before tabloid journilism*

Yes we all face our own mortality. No sunrise/sunset is a given. So incase, I don’t wake up tomorrow John, who is blabbermouth

    Walter Cronkite R.I.P
There will never be another newscaster that will equal the impact that Mr. Cronkite had with his news coverage.

My favorite memory is one that involved my 4 year old daughter. Every afternoon when Mr. Cronkite came on tv, my little daughter would rush in from the yard, sit in the floor right in front of the tv. She would listen intently until his program ended. I asked her “why do you like this man so much?” Her answer was “because he wears a tie”. She thought only the good guys wear ties.lol

I remember well when George Wallace stood in front of the door at the University of Alabama. What may not be remembered is, his standing in the door was a pre-arranged agreement with RFK, for political reasons.

I still get chills and the hair stands up on my arms when I hear Martin Luther Kings “I have a Dream speech”.

Now, does anyone reading here remember Gabriel Heater? Probably not except for Beverly. ?
He also had a powerful voice, and a knack for delivering news during WW2. He always started his program with “Folks, there’s sad news tonight”. I remember well sitting in the floor in a corner being so afraid. With air raid sirens blaring, black shades pulled down, the fire in the fireplace doused to keep smoke from being detected by some bomber flying over. I don’t think I will ever be that afraid again.

  7. Beth says:

RIP Walter Cronkite, there will never be another broadcaster that has that type of discipline and integrity.

(this can be moved or deleted if you do not want it here)
This post belongs on the other thread, I cannot stomach to go there and even look at that horrid picture. Maybe that is not ‘so mature’ but I have had it up to my eyeballs with the daily harassment from that TX bunch. I am sorry but, anyone (to me anyway) who even gives them the time of day… well, that makes me just…… I will stop myself.

I DO NOT, I REPEAT ‘NOT’ THINK LB WILL GIVE THESE ASSHOLES IN TX THE TIME OF DAY! HE HAS DONE NOTHING WRONG, HE DID NOT CONSPIRE AND HE WAS NOT THREATENED BY VA imo. THERE WAS NO REASON FOR HIM TO GET HER OUT OF THE WAY. I certainly HOPE that he will NOT BE INTIMIDATED to settle with those awful people who truly need to be stopped from this conspiracy to harm so many people out of plain revenge and greed!

*THIS IS NOT WHAT OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM IF FOR!!!

LB >> SHOULD APPEAL, HE SHOULD APPEAL OR TELL THEM TO SHOVE THOSE ILLEGAL ORDERS FROM THAT SLEEPING JUDGE UP WHERE THE SUN NO LONGER SHINES! He has rights like ALL of the Defendants do!

I GET VERY ANGRY HE WAS EVEN DRUG INTO THIS MESS! NO ONE SHOULD BE IN THIS STUPID SUIT… WELL, AGAIN….. I will stop myself.

It is not because I think so highly of him or HKS… It is just plain WRONG and UNJUST!

(about that other article…. The name of the article really upset me, I felt it was fanning the flames that the TX idiots wanted… PLUS! That Law does not apply to her, NO MATTER what their ‘patsy’ tries to tell everyone.)

THESE WORDS BELOW HAVE A GREAT DEAL OF TRUTH AND INSIGHT!
    p. 122
“1824. Swims, I believe that maybe they are concerned about HKS “coming after them” as Marsy’s law prohibits the Defendant from going after the ‘victim’ (NOT) ‘s relatives of interest. (like in suing them for conspiracy and winning a monetary award) Could that be a far out possibility?
So, very strange. I do not think this applies at all in this circumstance, I was also wondering if this was to go after HKS later if he was to write a true book about his life with Anna… would they try to get the proceeds if HKS is even convicted of even (1) simple count like the medicine in his name? Sounds ridiculous, all of it! I was just trying to figure out the reasoning… which can make a person actually insane! lol
There are rumblings (I do not doubt the source of who is stating this) of LB thinking of settling w/ VA… Now, if so this truly surprises me to no end! I was also surprised at how the sleeping judge said to LB’s (stand-in lawyer) that he had to fork over his income information. ???? Shouldn’t he just Appeal that nonsense? I do not think if he is actually thinking of dealing with TX is a smart move. He will forever have to deal w/ them for the next 15 years then — until DL is 18. Also, TX wants someone to throw HKS under the bus and agree with their wild tales of deals and other asinine fables!

Posted at 3:36PM on Jul 21st 2009 by DTHD TX
    *****
There is no question HKS is coming after them. The criminal defense alone in one way or another will tear apart the TX cabal and every sorry excuse for a human that was even remotely associated with it.

Civil conspiracy and possibly criminal activity is the focus of the SC – North Georgia front. Hachette Books USA has basically thrown in the towel (during oral arguments) and it was the ONLY supporter of Cosby (beyond VA’s bizarre confession/affidavit to being/doing everything ANS said she was/did in the ‘Mommie Dearest’ interview)

LB will never settle with VA. VA is responsible for the nastiest rumors that haunt LB. Opri slides in the muck behind VA as a reasonable second in that department. Both women treated LB like a dog when he wouldn’t sell DL to VA or pay media-whoring fees for 18 years to nasty Opri. Both women have sued him, trash-talked about him and denigrated ANS/DL in the process.

There is no such thing as ‘Son of Sam’ laws in America. They were all struck down as being unconstitutional long ago. Criminal conviction or not gives no one any special standing to (covet) pursue proceeds from book deals, interviews, biographies, etc.

Who is JN calling a blabber mouth? Any one know, or have a guess???

  9. Bewildered says:

There’s so many to choose from, it’s hard to guess Trina

  10. JMA says:

trina & Bewildered I have one in mind ;-) I know most will agree she is one Big Blabber Mouth. Bet you know who I am referring too don’t you. If not I’ll give a hint, I refer to her these days as Queen Of Bait you know due to all her “soon” & “wait and see”

Oh speaking of Queen Of Bait, anyone catch the tidbit she fed the sharks concerning DL no longer having a Nanny. Hmm, wonder if she knows what color underwear Larry puts on every day.

  11. JMA says:

OMG, in reference to Swims post #1812, this makes sense at least IMO it does. Could it be McCabe wants VA protected by Marsy’s Law to prevent her from being Deposition for the criminal trial should it go forward?

    #5 concerning the “Victims” rights…

“To refuse an interview, deposition, or discovery request by the defendant, the defendant’s attorney, or any other person acting on behalf of the defendant, and to set reasonable conditions on the conduct of any such interview to which the victim consents.”

    This is Swims take…

Or will McCabe also try to bamboozle civil Judges in other States into believing VA does not need to sit for depositions or allow all of her previous or any new materials to be produced because of a CA Law? Such as when ‘criminally charged’ HKS comes after her from Northern Georgia, South Carolina and Harris County Courts? Imagine the legal billable hours that could be racked up debunking that nonsense; especially when a question would be is McCabe VA’s Attorney or co-defendant?

Not to just protect Virgie, but also anyone (O’Q law Firm) working on her behalf. It does seem like it could be a counter-move, doesn’t it? TX is good at that.

  14. JMA says:

trina [13] thanks for pointing out the “anyone working on her behalf” yeah it does cover those bases too. Yep sure, does look as though this was a counter-move or cover thy asses-move.

  15. Bewildered says:

As soon as FS started talking, paperwork was filed to ‘get a front row seat’. Does seem suspicious, doesn’t it?

Will hotel/ lodging and airline tickets be more cost effective?

LA is just swarming with paparazzi aren’t they? So better throw in a couple bodyguards too. Will a limo be too obvious? Maybe car rental for the entourage then.

Is defending a client a tax write off if they don’t have the funds?

The tune from Beverly Hillbillies just popped into my head.

  16. JMA says:

Bewildered [15] may need to touch up on that makeover while they’re at it ;-)

“Beverly Hillbillies popping in head” now that’s funny  except instead of Old Jed’s, a Millionaire it will be changed to Old Virgie’s a Millionaire. Ha-ha NOT and never will happen, well unless she plays the lottery and still chances are very slim.

Report: DEA raids Jackson doctor’s Houston clinic
By JUAN A. LOZANO and THOMAS WATKINS, AP

HOUSTON — Federal drug agents searched the Houston clinic of Michael Jackson’s doctor Wednesday, according to a news report, even as investigators in California sought more information from the man.

  19. BEVERLY says:

JMA–Just got home, and put the TV on I will tell you.I cannot stop crying,Jermanine Jackson was begging people to leave his brother alone and focus on positive. They remind me of the BAGS ON TOPIX,it is right up there ally.WHY? was the DEA SO LACKS .now they care

  20. JMA says:

Beverly ~~ check out this video from MSNBC Today. It concerns the doctor as well as the final resting place for Michael Jackson. It still has not been decided as to where he will be buried due to the family feuding over it. I agree with the person/woman saying some of his family has their own agendas and how some of them need the Michael Jackson name for their own success and their financial success is what some of his family is putting first.

I do not agree with Jermaine Jackson on Michael being buried at Neverland Ranch.

  21. BEVERLY says:

JMA—-You may think I am way off the beaten path, but I would have the tree dug up Michael love to sit in,in Neverland, put it in a quiet place, with water, have him cremated, and ashes put under the tree.Michael loved to sit in one special tree and write songs .Did you hear Joe wants Neverland moved to LAS VAGAS.

  22. BEVERLY says:

BETH—-That picture should have been shown in court when Vergie went FOR VICTIM RIGHTS,Looks like a griving mother does, she not, that smile shows real grief, and that is how that COW has looked from the time daniel and Anna died.

  23. JMA says:

Bev ~~ I guess we all have our opinion of it but mine is based on what Michael said after Neverland was raid. He never returned there after his trial and said he never would due to feeling violated after the police raided it.

OMG, no I did not hear about Joe Jackson wanting to move Neverland to Vegas, ah that would not make it the same Neverland then or does he think they can just hitch the Mansion up on a trailer and move it. IMO that man needs to stop speaking publicly due to the more he talks the crazier it makes him look.

  26. DiamondGirl says:

    20.

JMA ? What is your reason Jackson should not be buried there?

  27. Rose says:

July 22, 2009 Virgie Arthur’s Response to Teresa Stephens Multiple Motions to Cancel Stephens Motions and for a Capias Order for the arrest of Stephens in Tarrant County or any other county in Texas and to be transported back to Harris County at the expense of Arthur..

    http://www.rosespeaks.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&op=getit&lid=2227

  28. JMA says:

DiamondGirl [26] I guess my reason would be due to what Michael himself said on how he felt after the raid at Neverland Ranch the feeling of being violated and how he would never live there again. To me if he did not want to return/live there while alive then IMO he should not be made to return there for all eternity.

  29. JMA says:

Rose [28] well here we go again let’s throw our weight around by having Bloggers sent to jail thinking it is going to get Team Texas what they want. This is such bullshit and I know my court system would never tolerate this kind of nonsense.

  30. hmm says:

I thought Teresa sent her pleadings to another court, judge not the 280?????McShame is filing in the 280th is that the way things are handled when filings are sent to a higher or different court. If so it seems that untill some big guns get in their CBS ,TMZ that judge wll give McShame just what he wants instead of following the law

  31. DiamondGirl says:

28, I will address this tomorrow for you.

  32. Ken says:

hmm [30] You get it. and tomorrow there is gonna be even some more astounding and stunning developments coming out of the 280th

  33. JMA says:

DG [31] OK hope my opinion concerning where I think he should not be buried did not upset you.

  34. DiamondGirl says:

    33. Not at all JMA. I understand the reasoning that you have but hear me out on this.

We all know that that Neverland was to be sold due to Jacksons debt. Michael made sure he did not lose complete control of Neverland. Why do you think he did that? We also know that he stopped an auction that was to happen with his personal items. Again why? I really think he would have moved back after a few things happened: Sneddon resigned from the DA’s office (IMO Sneddon wanted Jackson badly) and when Jackson was back on top. Now if his body can be placed on the land, he would have his beloved Neverland back. In an article, prior to his death, he said he would always be Peter Pan ( and there is a great picture in Ebony (I believe) that shows this.

    http://www.ebonyjet.com/michael_jackson/MJsaved/MJBTS.swf

I am not talking making it a zoo again. I think people would go and visit Neverland. Also remember this place is where the older children know it as home.

But I am also a very firm believer that Jackson never molested any child. And I will argue that point until I am blue in the face.

  35. JMA says:

DaimondGirl [34] you make some very good points that I had not thought of. Hmm now, I may have to rethink this and maybe try to look past what Michael had said which may have been due to everything was so fresh, meaning raid, trial and the ridiculing. Michael’s words may have stemmed due to upset of his home and private possessions being rummaged through by strangers.

DG, did you happen to catch what the residents had to say should Neverland become the burial place for Michael or even a Museum, they are not supporting that idea at all due to the chaos it would cause them due to the location.

I agree with you I too feel Michael Jackson never did anything inappropriate to any child.

  36. DiamondGirl says:

JMA, I think those neighbors are concerned about a lot of things that MIGHT happen. Lets face it, when Jackson lived there, they had fans traveling those same roads. They are worried about food concessions and bathrooms? Well I can imagine that can all be taken care of. If there is a will, there is a way. Look at what LA did for the memorial service. Has 3500 people on duty to handle riots, traffic and such. Even fed those officers lunch (how nice, that was brought in from 80 miles away.. real nice to keep the income in the community wasn’t it?) Meanwhile by my calculations based on 1.4 million bucks, minus the 49, 000 for lunches, divided by the 3500 people that were on duty, each one was paid appox 386.00, for how many hours work? If 8 hours, then it would be $48.25 per person per hour. For that money, they could have brought their own damn lunch. The point being, there were no riots and there was not any trouble. There was no need to have all those people on duty. His fans were there in awe of their icon being dead. Now if you want to talk about protection for the doctor in all of this…………..

Ever been robbed? I can imagine that he did indeed feel violated. There was so much made about that secret room, oh boy, it had his save in it. It was a panic room. I wonder how many stars of his level have a panic room? I wonder how many millionaires have one.

Did you look at the pictures?

  37. JMA says:

DiamondGirl [36] the residents main concerns are how having Neverland turned into a Sanctuary or Museum would cause more chaos then was cause when fans wanted to get a peek of Michael when he was alive. They have said this part of town/location is not easily accessible only one way in and one way out not to mention there are no Hotel/Motels/Restaurants in close vicinity of the location.

Yes, Michael’s Memorial went very smoothly not one problem was reported well other then the expense. I agree nothing wrong with brown bagging it. Not understanding why the sandwiches had to come from 70 miles away must have been a gourmet one

Ah, I think I’ll skip the protection of the Doctor part, still haven’t quite weighed in on that one yet.

Yes unfortunately, I have been robbed but not in my own home. Years ago, a friend and I were coming out of an establishment when three guys attacked us though they only wanted our purse’s we fought them like hell, even so they still got our purses. Yeah that is some scary shit and the police said we should have just handed them over but that’s not part of who I am. Fortunately that same night two were caught, one was because he overdoses on my friends Asthma Inhalers and the other tried robbing someone else in their home.

Are you talking about the picture of the secret room? I saw the secret room when he did the interview with the journalist Martin Bashir. I would bet there are many Stars and Millionaires that have one too.

  38. DiamondGirl says:

Not the picture of the panic room, but the pictures on the link I provided. When you open the link you will see a picture. Go to the 4th picture. This photo reminds me of Peter Pan or (lol) Willy Wonka.

I think that with everything that happened at Neverland, he lost his secure feeling. He no longer has to worry about that.
