Barack Obama

I always vote a split ticket and refer to myself as a “Moderate Independent”; most of my best friends are Republicans. Sometimes I feel like MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough who is a Republican and most of his friends are Democrat.

I remember the fear of the first Catholic President, John F. Kennedy, and all of the fear leading up to the election of the “fact” the Pope would run our country and we had to prevent that at all costs. He won by a very narrow margin and my mom kept me up late to see the results, she told me I was witnessing history; and I was.

I voted for Nixon both times and as I tell my friends, the man broke my heart. I did not vote for Clinton either time, staying home from voting in both elections.

I feel like this election I am the most informed on the different visions for our country, and through that, I am also the most informed on what is happening in my state, then I have ever been before, and I have to say I felt empowered by that. The internet has changed forever how the average person gets information; it is both a curse, some say, and a giant blessing others say.

However, can a diminishing white majority that sees that in their lifetimes they will become the minority, be able to vote for a black candidate. It is a valid question, in my opinion. If you can’t vote for him because he is black then own those feelings, we still have that freedom here to say, “I just can’t, I fear him”. You don’t have to own those feelings with others, but own them in your very core being.

If you vote strictly on the issues of today, the different visions of each candidate then you have done good. If you took all of the “Barack Obama” propaganda, put out there by a very small radical group of the Republican Party, from his birth certificate is “false”; he is “Muslin”; he has “terrorists for friends”, then please go to www.snopes.com read and research. The same goes for Palin, read about the 17 years her husband was in a true hate the U. S. flag, Secessionist Party in Alaska, but don’t buy into that Sarah Palin herself belonged to that party because that is as false as the propaganda about Barack Obama.

It bothers me that Republicans are saying, “We can hold Pennsylvania if we can keep voter turnout low in Philadelphia”. Do what?? So many people before us have died to keep the largest democracy in the world free to VOTE.

Research and vote on issues, not on the color of the candidates’ skin or the fear mongering put out there by a very select few. This is most likely not only history we are observing and participating in, but also for the direction of our country with the most serious issues and future, we face.

By the way, both sides have been “Socialists” and “Nationalists”, very nasty words to most Americans. Remember, Medicare and Social Security is “Socialist” if you go by the core meaning of the word/term. We are also “Nationalists” if you go by the core meaning of that term/word because we just took over as taxpayers many banks.

I had a beautiful drive in the country to vote, I took all kinds of identifications to prove whom I am because of the tightening of ID verification needed to match up here in Texas. Your voter registration had to match your picture ID and the new database here in Texas and my does not. The reason it does not is because I am on Social Security, Medicare, and I became eligible before Ken and I got together. My picture ID reflects the last name of Turner, my voter registration had my first name and Turner as the last name but had my middle initial on it so there was a frantic search for marriage license, a bill, anything to prove I am who I am because I wanted to vote.

When we got near the small country church that the voting machines are in here, I saw two Obama/Biden signs, one McCain/Palin and one for a local election and my heart felt hopeful. However, the black woman in line in front of us had to show so much ID, had to fill out paperwork had to hold up the line for all of us because she wanted to prove who she was and VOTE. When I got to where you sign in and present your ID, I was immediately processed with no need for picture ID or identification with the database. Is that fair?

Remember what King said, “I have a dream that the day will come when my children are not judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”. Hold that in your hearts, stand in line as long as you have to and Vote; you are part of history today.

In closing, someone sent me a saying yesterday that just seemed to fit:

“Out of clutter find Simplicity; from discord find Harmony; In the middle of difficulty lies Opportunity.”
~Albert Einstein~

Another thought, I am going to miss Tim Russert tonight on NBC and his simple white board, his animated predictions of which state would hold the election and win for one of the candidates. He would have loved this election and the history we are all part of today.

I have voted, have you?

Yes Rose I voted. I am a proud American who voted for Obama. I look forward to the change this country needs and pray
we get it. Barack has transcended race and has put it on the back burner where one day it will burn out and a man will be judged
on his character, not his skin color.
I have hope for our country and believe we are headed in a much more positive, inclusive direction where more of us will be given
the chance to learn, work and succeed. God truly does bless American and I pray she has learned a lot in these past few dark years.

*Truly insightful statements and questions, Rose!
I too have had Mr. Russert on my mind the last few days. It is sad he missed this historical campaign, of course even sadder that his family has to be without him. He was a good man I believe, and had a good soul.
Another sad event was Barack’s grandmother passing away yesterday. A great quote by A.E.!

It is time for racial discord to be non-existent! I have never understood any human being thinking they were ‘better’ than someone else.
They are NOT GOD, they have no right to think they are better or to judge someone due to the circumstances of:
    - different gender (I also hope equal pay for men & women gets fixed soon)
    - different race or culture
    - different backgrounds (eastside / westside; poor / rich)

*I believe it is time for these ignorant people who do discriminate on sex, age, race, wealth…. TO GET EDUCATED!

Yes, I too have voted for our future leader Barack Obama. I’ve been glued to the TV all day even though poll closing is still a couple of hours away. Actually, I’ve been close to tears several times today listening to older African-Americans speak of their past experience, watching he elderly make their way to the polls some waling – some in wheelchairs, watching young and old vote – some for the first time. Today means so much to so many. I have faith in this man – now is his time – now is our time.

  6. Sammy1 says:

We have come a long way since I was first eligible to vote. I was a child in the Roosevelt era, and grew up to become a Registered Independent voter. I am very happy that Obama has reached national prominence, and is accepted by so many unbiased people. I sincerely hope that he wins this one. He has run an honorable campaign in my opinion, and is quite capable of being a good president for all the people.

However, there are problems in five states already with the voting machines and the polls are just now closing in many parts of the country, so you have to wonder what the outcome will be.

  13. savesomething says:

Did not know that black peoples were giving permission to vote only in year 60….64 I am not sure

  14. raven says:

Save…it’s a shame, and just look what women suffered through to get voting rights. It’s a new beginning. :) Hooray for Obama!

  15. Beth says:

    ROSE!
    Yes.
A white majority IS ready and willing to support a Black President!
John McCain is just now giving an eloquent concession speech.

    This is a Historical Day!

Actually, I am quite impressed w/ what McCain is saying to his supporters…

THIS IS A NEW DAY TO BEGIN A HEALING PROCESS FOR OUR NATION.

    God Bless America.

  16. hmm says:

Yes we can-Yes we will-yes we did and Obamas speech at crant park was just great,. He gave credit to his supporters who were with him at all times and called on all of us to do our part to bring this nation together and to help one another and support one another. His talk about the 106 year old women who cast her ballot brought ters and did you see Jackson and some others not only with tears but big smiles. If you noticed there were an awful lot of young people out there tonight along with all other age groups I thought Senator obama was very gracious in saying he hoped to work with Senator Mccain and Palin and giving them credit for the hard fought campaign

  17. savesomething says:

YESSSSS,americain are ready for a new era. Thanks so much friends. For you and also for the rest of the planet!!!!!planet who fear about there life, fear to know if they will be able to eat the next day!!!!so proud of this young ,intelligent black Americain. GIVE PEACE A CHANCE!!!

  18. savesomething says:

Oprah was crying.I knew about Obama by her.I love Jo Biden he his my man.Full of inside joy and love.He will be a good hand for Obama.I saw the old lady on the net week ago 106 years old.Incredible. A poet say in 1954 that the 21 century will be spiritual or won’t be.I believe we are on the good way now!!!

  19. savesomething says:

Also on his discour Obama said that his daughters will be able to have a pet!!! Like this man.

  20. JMA says:

I do not judge a person by their color but by their individual actions. I support our new President, feel we are in a desperate need for change, and hope this is our beginning.

Saves I saw that Oprah was in the crowd at grant park ,I guess it should not have surprised me cause she is from Chicago but it did. I thought she would be more with the Obama crew..I hope everyone can show support for our new president no matter how you voted.God Bless America where anything is possible as shown by what happened today.

  23. ray says:

I guess I’m in the minority here I voted for McCain. Yes I will back our new President I’m American first. But I have to say this so don’t all jump me. Remember Obama is half white too. For so many to say the first African American voted in is wrong. He is both white and black. To me it disks his white family. I have always had a problem with the words African American. We are all American..I don’t say I’m French American. Even the Indians say American Indian. Ok now everyone jump on me. LOL

  24. Daisy says:

You know what Ray I happen to agree with you. Barack is an American and he probably would like to leave it at that.
We started using African American to get away from the “n” word. The African Am. society became offended with black
but I have noticed it is being used again.
I believe, one day this race issue will be looked back on as a forgotten era; but for now it is the most important era of my life time.

  25. Daisy says:

Also Ray, as I told many of my friends who also voted for McCain, give Barack a chance and I believe you will
be pleasantly encouraged with his choices. It is my very strong opinion the Lord has given America a leader
who you only see every so often.
I have had a difficult time these past years. I have had a burden in my heart and the feeling of oppression.
I woke up today with a feeling of hope, one in which I have never felt in my life time. And I can not imagine
what it must feel like in the black community but my heart rejoices.

  26. Daisy says:

And please don’t let my comment be misunderstood, I do not want to diminish the significance of placing into the office of
president of the United States the first African American. As Barack says, he was always treated black
    and he understands discrimination.

  27. Beth says:

I know this e-mail is sent out to many…
I just wanted to share it with some that may have not received it.
I cried many times last night, I hope the world will allow this man to lead us all out of the mess we are in.

    “Beth —

I’m about to head to Grant Park to talk to everyone gathered there, but I wanted to write to you first.

    We just made history.

And I don’t want you to forget how we did it.

You made history every single day during this campaign — every day you knocked on doors, made a donation, or talked to your family, friends, and neighbors about why you believe it’s time for change.

I want to thank all of you who gave your time, talent, and passion to this campaign.

We have a lot of work to do to get our country back on track, and I’ll be in touch soon about what comes next.

But I want to be very clear about one thing…

All of this happened because of you.

    Thank you,

    Barack”

Oprah will have a special on about this today.

I am off, have a great day everyone.

A ‘white majority’ = BULLSHIT! Let this guy take his shot, I dont see a color, I see a guy who is taking a chance! Does he have an agenda, who doesn’t? We have had all the ‘white’ ones I can stand! I was ready for an Obama or a Hillary. We need a leader and quite frankly I could careless as to what color his skin is. This country is in a little trouble and I think that Obama will be a breath of fresh air.
I am as racist as they come, and in my book I have always disliked most people with equal candor. While I was a prison guard the inmates had a ‘counsel’ this was the administrations way of keeping the animals(inmates) on a lease. You know, make them think that their useless opinions meant something. Well they would complain about the beds being bad for older inmates, they would complain about the food, or the medical and sometimes the guards. Imagine, convicts complaining about the guards. Well one time a few members of the ‘BGF’ aka The Black Gorilla Family, a very ruthless and deadly gang complained about me as being a racist. Well one of the biggest and ugliest SOBs in the yard told the ‘group’ that Officer Nazarian pretty much hated everyone equally, and he was right! I found it easy to dislike all of them and then when I found a few that had some redeemable traits(to my standards) I would deal with them. This ability has followed me pretty much through my life…..A candy manufacturer once thought that a ‘Nazarian’ candy bar would be nice, sure it would be, ” nice but not too sweet”.
I hope that The Obama’s have a wonderful time in the White House and that he can do just half of what he has stated in the campaign.

John J. Nazarian, P.I. and still a Proud American

  32. hmm says:

I got the same one Beth So I assume you supported him either finiancially or as a supporter going door to door.Spy you have it right Give the Man a chance .Already people are being negative and he hasn’t even been sworn in.You can find good and bad anywhere. I too Hope he can do half of what he wants with the finincial mess we are in right now>As he said It will take time Things don’t happen with the snap of a finger. We need to come together as a country and stop with the all the negative energy that abounds . There are not two America there is only one and we are all patriotic not just certain parts of the country. I am also a proud American

  33. hmm says:

Obam a also has a new web site up hopefully to keep everyone appraised of what is going on change.gov Nothing on it yet but I think it is to keep his pledge to keep the doors of government open and available to everyone
